The due date for filing ITR for individuals (non-audit cases) is July 31st of the assessment year. For businesses requiring audit, it is October 31st. A belated return can be filed up to December 31st with a late fee of ₹1,000–5,000. The exact dates may change each year per government notifications.
Filing is mandatory if your gross income exceeds the basic exemption limit (₹2.5 lakh under old regime, ₹3 lakh under new regime). However, filing is recommended even below the limit if you want to claim a refund of TDS deducted, apply for a visa, get a bank loan, or carry forward capital losses.
Form 16 is a TDS certificate issued by your employer showing salary paid and TDS deducted. It is the primary document for salaried ITR filing. However, you can still file your return using your payslips and Form 26AS even if your employer hasn't issued Form 16.
Common deductions include: Section 80C (₹1.5 lakh — PPF, ELSS, LIC, EPF, home loan principal), Section 80D (health insurance premiums), Section 24(b) (home loan interest up to ₹2 lakh), Section 80E (education loan interest), HRA exemption, LTA, and standard deduction of ₹50,000.
The new tax regime offers lower rates but no exemptions or deductions (except NPS contribution). The old regime has higher rates but allows 80C, 80D, HRA, home loan and other deductions. The better regime depends on your income level and investment profile — our CA calculates both and recommends the optimal choice.
You can file an updated return (ITR-U) for the previous 2 assessment years with an additional tax of 25–50% on the unpaid tax amount. For even older years, voluntary disclosure is possible. We handle belated and updated filings with full guidance on the applicable penalties.
